Scholarship Recipient – Ayotunde Ajijolaiya

Dear Joe Baca Jr,

Thank you for the scholarship. This scholarship is very important to me because I truly love my community and the people associated with the Joe Baca Foundation are truly the best. Your sister, Natalie, was very patient. The three people who interviewed me were so nice and made me feel at home and safe. I met many who had the same goals as mine, but different ways of obtaining them. This was hands down the best experience ever!

Thank you so much for the donation of 15 turkeys for Thanksgiving 2008. As result of your generosity, 69 San Bernardino CountN residents were able to participate in a Thanksgiving meal who otherwise would have gone hungry.

First Chance’s mission is to prevent pain and suffering through the provision of outreach education and services provide in a fashion that is culturally appropriate and linguistically relevant. Your organization’s donation assisted us in meeting this mission for these 69 residents. Of these residents 22 were children under 10 years of age living in homes with income under the federal poverty level. Another 8 of the residents are seniors who would not have been able to afford to provide for themselves or the children for whom they are caring. Many of the other recipients are single parents raising children in the Inland Empire. Your donation has made a significant difference in improving the lives of Inland Empire residents.

Thank you again for your ongoing support of the San Bernardino community. The provision of turkeys is greatly appreciated and we look forward to working with you and your foundation to provide additional positive and supportive services during the upcoming year.

Sincerely,

Robert and Faith l3olton

Scholarship Recipient – Tami Bi

Tami BiTo the Joe Baca Foundation:

My name is Tami Bi and I want to thank you for choosing me as one of the Joe Baca Scholarship recipients for the 2008 year. I am currently attending UCLA and though the transition from high school to college has been a bit difficult, I have remained strong and have tried my best to keep up with everything. I feel that the scholarship has given a bit of relief financially and I am grateful for it. When I return to San Bernardino, I hope to make a difference in another person’s life just like what you’ve done for me.

On the side note, I did make the UCLA Marching Band as one of the Colorgurad (tall flags) member. May be some of you have seen me on television during the football games but did not realize it; if not, try to catch me at the UCLA v. USC game. Go Bruins!

Thanks again,
Tami Bi

Scholarship Recipient – Elizabeth Manzo

Elizabeth ManzoDear Baca Family:

I want to take this opportunity to thank you and the Joe Baca Foundation, for having given me the wonderful opportunity to further my education. It is an understatement to say that I had a great time at the awards ceremonies. It is every aspiring professional’s dream to meet with working people, who once found themselves in similar circumstances as our, to share their stories.

It was a very memorable experience and I know that there will be many more to come. This scholarship is of great help to me and my family, since I am not able to apply for financial aid. I will be attending Cal-State Fullerton University, in the fall (August 25) I plan to earn my B.A. in communications, with a concentration in broadcast journalism – Minor in French and graduate with honors.

I am attaching my community volunteer sheet, along with some pictures I took at the Millennium Baltimore Hotel, in L.A. Fortunately, I received a scholarship from the CCNMA Latino Journalist as well. They hosted an award ceremony, where I met KTLA’s Elizabeth Espinoza, “El Piolin”, and Univisions’s Spanish news anchor, Sergio Urquidi.

Once again, thank you to all of you for making my education possible. I will definitely not forget, and I hope to come back to San Bernardino some day and do the same for others.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth Manzo

Scholarship Recipient – Marisa Mendoza

Marisa MendozaDear Mr. and Mrs. Baca Jr.,

I want to extend my gratitude to you and the selection committee for believing enough in me to pick me as on of the Joe Baca Scholarship Award Recipients.

I graduated on June 11th and during the ceremony I couldn’t help but reflect on my school years. Some of the most meaningful memories came from the two evening you gave me. I remembered the stories of struggle shared by the other students and I felt privileged to be amongst a group of hard working and motivated people. I also remembered your Dad’s speech and how much it meant to him to have someone believe in him. I feel the same. I am honored to be a Joe Baca Scholar and I hope to succeed at Scripps College and bring pride to the Joe Baca Foundation and my community.

Thank you again for everything that you have done for me. I will be in touch real soon because I would love to participate in the Basketball Clinic. In addition I am a registered Democrat and would like nothing more than to assist with your father’s re-election campaign. I can make calls or assist with mailings etc.

“Thank you… For all your help and all your caring, you’re appreciated more than you know.”

Sincerely,
Marisa Mendoza
